Kathy Bates, the Oscar-winning actress renowned for her roles in Misery and American Horror Story, has recently opened up about her transformative 100-pound weight loss journey. 

Bates attended the 36th Colleagues Spring Luncheon at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills on May 8.

The actress opened up to her workout for weight loss in May 2025.

On the red carpet event, Bates caught up with PEOPLE magazine.

During the interview, Kathy Bates shared her simple yet effective tool for staying svelte.

Walking!

Bates revealed,  “I think it’s the best exercise. Well, it’s great for me, and I have a treadmill at home.”

Walking is one of the simplest yet most effective forms of exercise with a wide range of health benefits.

Just 30 minutes of brisk walking a day can improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle endurance.

Kathy Bates Reveals Weight Loss Update

At 76, Bates attributes her success to a combination of lifestyle changes and medical intervention, aiming to improve her health and manage her type 2 diabetes diagnosis from 2017.

Bates emphasized that the majority of her weight loss—approximately 80 pounds—was achieved through these disciplined lifestyle changes. 

To shed the remaining 20 pounds, she turned to Ozempic, a medication prescribed for type 2 diabetes that also aids in weight loss. 

She clarified misconceptions by stating, “There’s been a lot of talk that I just was able to do this because of Ozempic… But I have to impress upon people out there that this was hard work for me, especially during the pandemic.”
